Miguel Ángel Rodriguez motivado a defender el título del British Open la otra semana
Previo al inicio del Allam British Open esta semana, el colombiano Miguel Ángel Rodríguez manifestó que llegará a Hull con el objetivo de retener el título que ganó de manera espectacular 12 meses atrás.
La edición 2019 del British Open, se llevará a cabo en el nuevo complejo deportivo de la Universidad de Hull entre el 20 y el 26 de mayo y Miguel Ángel se ha encontrado con gratos recuerdos de esta ciudad, después de haber derrotado al número dos del mundo, Mohamed ElShorbagy en el Airco Area el año pasado y así escribir su nombre en el histórico trofeo.
Ese día, Miguel Ángel se convirtió en el primer suramericano en toda la historia, en ganar un título PSA World Tour Platinium, y en el primer jugador no sembrado en la era moderna en ganar el trofeo del British Open, logro que además es más impresionante teniendo en cuenta los pocos jugadores en Colombia con los que puede competir y entrenar, comparado con los que tienen sus colegas.
?Es algo que permanecerá en mi mente por siempre?, dijo Miguel Ángel, el jugador de 33 años, nacido en Bogotá.
?Convertirme en una leyenda del British Open es algo muy difícil de describir. Estar en los libros de historia de este torneo es espectacular. Voy a recordar este torneo por siempre?.
Creo que ese momento en el que le gano el partido a Mohamed fue el más importante de mi carrera. Fueron muchos años de entrenamiento, de jugar, de viajar y eso lo pagó todo?
?Realmente quería ganar un torneo Platinium, pero nunca pensé que ganaría el British Open. Eso fue un gran regalo porque cuando era niño pensaba en estar en el top 20 y tal vez en el top 10 de mundo, pero nunca pensé que podría ganar el British Open, porque tal vez eso era mucho para mí. Especialmente porque soy de Suramérica donde no tengo las mismas condiciones de competencia y torneos [que otros]. Tu puedes considerar este torneo como el ?Wimbledon del Squash?. Hay mucha historia detrás de este torneo, y estoy muy orgulloso de haberlo ganarlo el año pasado, este fue el primer ?Grande? de mi carrera.
La victoria del British Open del año pasado hizo que Rodríguez se clasificara para las finales del PSA World Tour y, después de una temporada por debajo del par, en la que no pudo superar los cuartos de final de cualquiera de sus torneos, el No. 7 del mundo requiere un acto heroico similar para clasificar al evento de final de temporada en El Cairo el próximo mes.
Sin embargo, Rodríguez ha demostrado ser uno de los jugadores más resistentes del tour y se ha recuperado de una lesión, una enfermedad y un ranking mundial en el que cayó hasta el No.25 en mayo de 2017 para convertirse en una fuerza real en los principales torneos de este deporte.
Ahora, armado con la experiencia de reclamar los honores en el escenario más grande, Miguel Ángel Rodríguez insiste en que tiene lo necesario para defender su corona.

Creo que puedo seguir jugando por muchos años, y creo que puedo ganar muchos torneos más. Esto es como el pedacito de la gran torta que ya probé, ahora sé lo que se siente cuando ganas un torneo grande, especialmente derrotar al No. 1 del mundo en la final.
Voy a enfrentar este torneo con gran motivación, este año la competencia es incluso más difícil porque varios de los jugadores saben que pueden ganarlo.
Es una gran oportunidad para mí y un gran chance. Estoy emocionado de saber que soy el campeón defensor, sé que habrá mucha presión, pero quiero jugar, y quiero estar físicamente bien y saludable y las otras cosas vendrán.
Estoy muy seguro que puedo hacer lo mismo del año anterior, tengo muchas ganas de jugar este torneo y me encantaría ser el campeón del British Open otra vez.
Miguel Ángel es el sexto sembrado este año, y está en la misma línea del cuadro que ElShorbagy, con quien se podría enfrentar en los cuartos de final.
Rodriguez Motivated to Defend British Open Title Next Week
Ahead of this week’s Allam British Open, Colombia’s Miguel Rodriguez says that he is heading to Hull with the aim of retaining the title he won in stunning fashion 12 months ago.
The 2019 edition of the British Open will be held at the University of Hull’s new sports complex between May 20-26, and Rodriguez has fond memories of the city after beating World No.2 Mohamed ElShorbagy at the Airco Arena last May to etch his name onto the historic trophy.
In doing so, Rodriguez became the first South American ever to win a PSA World Tour Platinum title and the first unseeded player in the modern era to capture the British Open trophy – accolades that seem all the more impressive given his relative lack of training partners in Colombia when compared to a number of his contemporaries.
“It’s something that is going to be in my mind forever,” said Rodriguez, the 33-year-old from Bogota.
“Becoming a legend at the British Open is something that is difficult to describe. Being in the history books of this tournament is amazing, I’m going to remember this tournament forever.
“I think that moment when I won that match with Mohamed was my career highlight, there were so many years of training, playing, traveling, and it paid off.
“I really wanted to win a Platinum event, but I never thought I was going to win the British Open, that was a great gift because when I was a kid I was just thinking about being top 20 and maybe top 10 in the world, but I never thought I would win the British Open because it was maybe too far for me. Especially because I come from South America where I do not have the same competition and tournaments [than others]. You can consider this tournament as the ‘Wimbledon of Squash.’ There’s so much history behind this tournament, and I was very proud to win it last year, it was the first major event in my career. “
Last year’s British Open win saw Rodriguez qualify for the PSA World Tour Finals and, after a below-par season which has seen him fail to make it past the quarter-final stages of any of his tournaments this season, the World No.7 will require similar heroics to qualify for the season-ending event in Cairo next month.
However, Rodriguez has proven himself as one of the most resilient players on the tour and has fought back from injury, illness and a world ranking which dropped as low as No.25 in May 2017 to become a real force at the sport’s best tournaments once again.
Now armed with the experience of claiming silverware on the biggest stage, Rodriguez insists that he has what it takes to defend his crown.
“The passion and the love that I have for this sport is huge, and it motivates me,” he said.
“I still think that I can play for many years, and I think that I can win many tournaments. It’s like a little piece of a big cake that I’ve already tasted, now I know how it feels when you win a big tournament, especially beating the World No.1 in the final.
“I’m going to face this tournament with great motivation, this year the competition is even harder because most of the players know that they are capable of winning it.
“It’s a great opportunity for me and a great chance. I’m excited knowing that I’m the defending champion, I know there’s going to be a lot of pressure, but I want to play, I want to be fit and healthy the other things will come.
“I’m pretty sure that I can do the same thing last year, I’m looking forward to playing this event, and I would love to be the British Open champion again.”
Rodriguez is seeded for this year’s tournament and has been drawn on the same side of the draw as ElShorbagy, with the pair seeded to lock horns once again in the quarter-finals.
